With only two weeks to the opening of the Chengdu 2021 FISU Games, the Main Media Center (MMC) opened on Thursday, offering journalists from across the globe a chance to immerse themselves in Chengdu’s vibrant culture and savor its culinary delights.

Situated on the second floor of the MMC, the media food court presents an extensive buffet-style dining experience.

“We have carefully curated a selection of Chinese and Western cuisines to cater to the varied tastes of journalists representing different nations. The menu is refreshed daily, ensuring a seven-day cycle of culinary surprises,” explained Fu Xiaoxi, the media services manager.

Adjacent to the restaurant, a spacious platform featuring a traditional teahouse bring China's rich cultural heritage to life. The non-cultural heritage exhibition area highlights exquisite crafts such as Shu embroidery, one of China's four major embroidery types, and bamboo weaving, while the cultural interaction zone invites journalists to participate in hands-on activities like sugar painting and traditional Chinese medicine experiences.

Zhang Hongjun, cultural activities commissioner of the MMC, elaborated, “From July 25 to August 8, we will stage captivating performances in the afternoons and evenings, aiming to provide a remarkable cultural experience. The lineup includes displays of Qingcheng Wushu (an important school of Chinese martial arts), the Sichuan opera face-changing art, and the water sleeve dance, all of which embody the essence of traditional Chinese culture.”

For journalists seeking leisure and entertainment, the interactive recreational area offers state-of-the-art facilities. Through cutting-edge VR technology, they can embark on an immersive journey of cycling along the Tianfu Greenway, the largest such route in the world. VR simulations of running, rowing, and table tennis also provide enjoyable workouts within the virtual environment.

On the sixth floor of the MMC, the pop-up bar serves as an integrated space that caters to the diverse needs of global media, offering a seamless blend of office facilities, leisurely interactions, and immersive cultural experiences.

Encompassing a total floor area of approximately 45,000 square meters (including a basement spanning 15,000 square meters), the MMC for Chengdu 2021 incorporates both the Main Press Center (MPC) on the first to third floors and the International Broadcast Center (IBC) on the 3rd to 5th floors. The 6th floor is a dedicated photography platform.

The first floor serves as the primary workspace, facilitating global coverage of Chengdu 2021. In addition to providing essential services such as office amenities, competition information inquiries, locker rentals, and document printing for media journalists, the space is equipped with LED screens and column-mounted televisions that continuously broadcast live competition footage as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.

Utilizing split-screen technology, the two LED screens in the working area enable the simultaneous display of up to 11 live signals from various competitions, allowing a small number of foreign media teams to effectively cover multiple venues from their workstations.

Each seat in the workspace is equipped with an information hub, providing charging ports, network interfaces, and multi-audio channel panels. Journalists can select their desired channels, plug in their headphones, and immerse themselves in live commentaries and ambient sounds, enabling them to concentrate on their work without disrupting others.

Furthermore, every media journalist is provided with a media kit containing a Media Guide, an umbrella, a hat, a notebook, a badge, a USB flash drive, postcards, and other useful items.

Following the conclusion of the Chengdu Games, the MMC will be repurposed as a library, continuing to serve the local community.
